Throwback Thursdays #1: Britney I Can Treat You Better

I used to keep a deviantART account back in high school but some time in college I had to take down all of my artworks there because of some reason I do not really want to talk about anymore.

Yes, I drew. Not really good but I had some pretty decent stuff and one of them was this.

I had planned on re-uploading the artworks I used to have there but I haven’t really gotten around to scanning all of them again. It’s too bad I also lost some of them and I don’t have the digital scans of them anymore. Up to this day I really regret caving into something and having to take them all down. 🙁

So to jumpstart my Throwback Thursdays post I decided to scan one of those drawings and I chose to upload this one.

My reference was one of Pete Wentz‘s old buzznet photos which he captioned with the words, The obligatory angle. This is actually one of my favorites even though it’s fairly simple with my reason being that I drew this without having to outline anything with a pencil. I used colored pencils directly and it doesn’t look too different from the reference photo, so yay me! 🙂

    So, what do you think?

Hopefully, like my writing, I would get to draw some stuff again and fill my deviantART with new artworks. I just need to completely get out of this rut I am in. *fingers crossed*

Till the next Throwback Thursdays post!^^

  • Music Mondays #2: The Phoenix – Fall Out Boy

Music Mondays #2: The Phoenix – Fall Out Boy

I had been a fan of Fall Out Boy ever since my friend, Rachel, introduced me to the band’s song, Sugar We’re Going Down, back when we were in high school. I instantly fell in love with the music, especially the words that were mostly penned by bassist, Pete Wentz.

Since the discovery of Sugar We’re Going Down I quickly looked for more songs until I was introduced with their previous albums namely Take This to Your Grave and Fall Out Boy’s Evening Out with Your Girlfriend. I was amazed at how Take This to Your Grave had so much angst in it. Whenever I listened to it, I felt all the rage that was in the songs. It was therapeutic even, especially during my dark moments when I feel like I am not good enough or I just feel like letting off some steam. It helped me get the bad feelings out and at the same time I started to appreciate Wenz’s words.

There was just an inexplicable attraction to Wentz’s words despite the weight they carried and I just couldn’t stop.

Fall Out Boy’s Evening Out with Your Girlfriend gave out that garage band vibe  for me and Take This to Your Grave felt like an escape from all the bottled up rage, Fall Out Boy progressed into mainstream music (From Under the Cork Tree, Infinity on High), eventually even delving into different music styles (Folie a Deux).

While most people stopped liking the band as much as they used to and while, I admit, I also miss the raging angsty lyric and music combo that Take This to Your Grave had, I continued to support the band because I believed in their music and I glorified their words. Supporting them was showing how much I feel indebted to the hours I spent finding some refuge in their words and music; how grateful I was to have these four boys to admire and make me feel it’s okay to live on despite all the struggles that come tossing our way.

When they announced their hiatus in 2009, I was devastated mostly because of the uncertainty of the future. Was this really an indefinite hiatus or is this the end of the four boys making music together as Fall Out Boy? I tried to support Wentz’ Black Cards and Stump’s solo music but it just wasn’t the same without Patrick singing Pete’s words, you know? It felt like something was missing.

And then it ignited again last February 4th when Pete dropped the bomb and announced that the hiatus was finally over. I was beyond excited especially seeing all four boys trying to promote their comeback. It was heartwarming to see such brotherhood among the four.

Fall Out Boy’s The Phoenix has just been released today and this song is the second song they’ve released ever since announcing the end of their hiatus and premiering the music video for My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light ‘Em Up) on the same date.

The music video for The Phoenix is a prequel video for My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light ‘Em Up) and will be the second video out of eleven.

What drew me to put this song as today’s featured music is its title, to be honest. I have always been fascinated by phoenixes—how they have to die in order to be born again. I find beauty in being able to rise again out of the ashes and this song gives a bit of that vibe into it.

I definitely can’t wait for the other videos to come out! In the meantime, you can check out the video here:

  • Minhwa Exhibit at the Korean Cultural Center in the Philippines

Minhwa Exhibit at the Korean Cultural Center in the Philippines

Two Saturdays ago, I went to the Korean Cultural Center located at the Bonifacio Global City in Taguig for my Basic Korean Language class. I had been away for two weeks because of sore eyes and was excited to come back because not only did I want to attend my class but because I also wanted to see the new exhibit that was displayed.

Me and Sai with the exhibit’s informative display.

The Korean Cultural Center launched the Minhwa Exhibit last March 8, 2013 and will be displayed until April 30, 2013.

Minhwa (민화) refers to Korean folk painting that usually comprises of mythical creatures as well as other animals or objects that could depict the varying aspects of their lives. Some paintings show mythology and legends, while some show scenes of every day life. There were even some that show symbols of peace and happiness as well as wealth and health.

    The Symbols and Their Meaning

Text: A tortoise which lives hundred years is meant by a wish for people’s long life.
Text (Top): ‘Haetae’, imaginary creature, can prevent the fire as defending justice, so it stands in front of the palace.
Text (Bottom): Ancient people believed that imaginary animals protect them from the evil. So they used to hang up the painting on the wall inside the house.
Text: A magpie is a lucky bird that brings good news; a messenger of the fortune. A tiger, on the other hand, delivers the news received from the magpie to other places.
Text: The figure of a crane that remains aloof from others means an upright official.
Text: Ancient people believed that a deer lives in a mythical world.
Text (Top): Long life has been a wish since a long time ago. People put this wish into painting with using a tortoise, pine, bamboo, deer, crane, stone, water, cloud, elixir plant (Bulrocho), and the sun.
Text (Bottom): A folk painting depicting several boys contains the ancestor’s wish for the fecundity of the boys.
Text (Top): A classical scholar wants to resemble pine tree because it symbolizes scholarly fidelity.
Text (Bottom): Peony symbolizes the wealth as well as the king of flowers

    The Paintings

The Minhwa Exhibit and Its Purpose

The Association of Korean Folk Painting Artists as well as eight artists (Kim Sang Cheol, Lee Mun Song, Lee Jung Dong, Eom Jae Kwon, Song Chang Soo, Youn In Soo, Keum Goang Bok, and Noh Yong Sik) participated in this particular exhibit.

The Director at KCC Philippines, Mr. HWang Seong Un, hoped that this exhibit would serve as a gateway for other forms of Korean art to be introduced to the Filipino consciousness and to be able to facilitate a cultural exchange between Korea and the Philippines. The Minhwa pieces on display were also meant to encourage both the Korean and Filipino people to get to know their respective cultural identities.

The paintings on display were absolutely breathtaking. If you’ve seen it for yourselves you’d be amazed at how detailed and colorful the pieces are. Some of them look as if they were printed pieces from afar! I would totally recommend seeing it because not only are the artworks amazing, visiting the exhibit is also totally free!

So if any of you guys are interested, The Minhwa Exhibit will be on display at KCC (Korean Cultural Center) Philippines located at:

    2F Mancor Corporate Center
    32nd St. Bonifacio Global City,
    Taguig City 1634 Philippines

For more information, you can contact the Korean Cultural Center at 555-1711 or email info@koreanculture.ph 🙂

  • Music Mondays #1: Begin – 東方神起

Music Mondays #1: Begin – 東方神起

I mentioned in my previous post how I have a lot of plans for this website—one of which is to have weekly themed posts for the blog. One of the weekly themed posts I have come up with, as you can see pictured above is Music Mondays! 😀

For Music Mondays I plan on sharing some of the songs or artists that I listen to and give a brief post about why or why I like the music. Let’s start, shall we?

I’ve been racking my brain the entire day thinking of what could jumpstart Music Mondays. I finally came to a decision while I was riding a bus on the way home and this particular Tohoshinki song started to play on my iPod.

This song was one of the very first songs I have heard from Dong Bang Shin Ki (or Tohoshinki as they are called in Japan), a Korean male group. It was a very auspicious introduction of the group, at least for me, because the moment I finished listening to it, I was drawn into getting to know more about them despite the fact that I was already aware of their split back in 2009.

Fitting of its title, this song was the beginning of a new chapter in my life. I instantly fell in love with the group. There was just something about the five of them—a dynamic of sorts—that I couldn’t quite put into words. They were The Rising Gods of the East, as the translation of their name says.

Every day and night with you,
I hold your small hand tightly~
    Every day, every night, everywhere,
Let’s always make sure our feelings are connected~
    Now, let the story begin~

Tohoshinki – The Secret Code Live in Tokyo Dome

I believe these boys are worthy of a great beginning for Music Mondays, don’t you think? I mean, just listen to this song! I don’t understand Japanese but the music, especially their voices, just warms up to you and it doesn’t hurt to read the English translation of the song to get to know the meaning. 😉

I will always look back to the songs they made as five with nostalgic warmth because at some point in this lifetime, the five of them made each and every one of them shine like a magnificently formed constellation in the night sky.

  • Kicking It into Gear

    Kicking It into Gear

The past week has just been wonderful and full of blessings that I wanted to write a recap of the awesome week I have had. To summarize: JYJ, website updates, PROMOTION!, Korean language class. A big thanks to everyone who made my week back at work one of the best weeks I’ve had in a while! 정말 고맙습니다 여러분!^^

If you’ve been following my Twitter feed or have read my previous post, you would know I’ve been stuck at home for two weeks because I had viral conjunctivitis (more commonly called as sore eyes). I was originally assigned to work from home starting the 20th of February until the 6th of March because I was required to work a 2 P.M. to 2 A.M. shift to support a project in the UK going live. However, around the 24th, my optalmologist noticed some early signs of me possibly getting sore eyes.

I may have acquired the virus during my commute the previous day to attend my Korean language class in Taguig. The doctor gave me the right medication in the hopes of preventing it from actually turning into sore eyes but it was still no use. I ended up having to extend my stay at home because my eyes were still red after March 6th. I also had two miss two sessions of my Korean language class because I didn’t want to infect other people with the virus so imagine my relief when just this last Tuesday, my doctor finally gave me permission to come to work the following day (YAY!)

I was excited because I hadn’t gone to the office in almost a month. My routine for the past two weeks of having sore eyes comprised of only eating, taking a bath, and sleeping all because it was hard for me to keep my eyes open long enough for me to do something fun or productive.

My day back at the office was fun, mainly because I got to see friends at work I hadn’t seen in a while and it was nice to feel I was missed. 🙂

My copy of The JYJ Magazine came just in time for White Day!

This photo can also be seen in this post.

We also had lunch at Bon Chon Chicken because I missed their Spicy Thigh Rice Box.

Top Photo: Michi, Marse, and I; Bottom Photo: Fel and Dan

I even asked my friends to take a picture of me before I went home. I told them I wanted to document and blog about my day back (here is the blog post I was telling you about guys!)

Michi, Marse, Kress, Me, and Ralph

For some reason, my being locked up at home for three weeks has gotten me a bit inspired to accomplish a lot of stuff. One of the things I’ve accomplished during the past three weeks was finishing a fictional narrative! (See related post here)

I also ended up having to tweak this website here and there. I’ve updated the links page and I’ve also added a few links and widgets to the sidebar as well!

But one of the feats I’ve accomplished for this humble little website was setting up the RSS feed! I joined BlogLovin’ just this week and I was wondering at first why I couldn’t claim or search for my blog there. Apparently I had to have an RSS feed for BlogLovin’ to find my blog. Since my blog is running on a self made backend, I didn’t have an RSS automatically set up. So guess what I did? I read on how to set up the RSS and ended up coding it all by myself.

It was pretty tedious since I had to track back to 35 posts I’ve written in the past but it was all worth the effort because now you can subscribe to my blog or follow trishasales.net on BlogLovin’! Hopefully this pulls in a wider readership. I’ve missed having regular readers~

I have a lot of plans for this website including themed posts to be done each week as well as updating the Written section. I’m still compiling the stuff I want to be uploaded there which is why the page is still empty. Hopefully it will get some content soon.

I also got to attend my Korean class yesterday after two weeks of no show!^^ I was excited to see my very cute Korean teacher as well as get back into learning the Korean language~ I’d need to review the lessons that were discussed while I was away though but hopefully I can still catch up.

I finally got my KCC (Korean Cultural Center) ID!^^

Sai and I visited dropped by the Minhwa exhibit displayed at KCC after class and then had lunch at the Pizza Hut Bistro at Glorietta 4. We ended up spending more than we’d hoped but the food was delicious anyway~

    Photo taken from Sai’s instagram.

But what tops this week of AWESOME is the fact that I finally got promoted at work! YAY! 😀 I didn’t expect it but I am really happy and thankful that I got promoted. I guess it’s only high time that I try to be more mature and try to reach my goals head on just the way I should and this opportunity is definitely it. I am really thankful that I’ve been given this wonderful opportunity and I won’t let it slip. I’m holding on to it! It’s time to show myself that I can be the better person I want to be if only I just believe and fight for it. You gotta live deliberate!

Moments or weeks like this should really be appreciated and remembered by and it’s just wonderful how I still have the chance to look back on such a great week. I really hope to get more of this in the future. 🙂

How about you? How has your week been? If you had a great week like I did, kudos to you! If not, hang in there, I’m sure you’ll have one too! 😉
